Here are the personnel actions and financial allocations for summer and other programs made by the Roanoke City Schools Board of Education at its meeting Tuesday, May 19.
1. RESIGNATION
Certified:
a. Sheldon Ward from his position as physical education teacher at Handley Middle School, effective May 22, 2026.
b. Brooke Bonner from her position as a kindergarten teacher at Knight Enloe Elementary, effective May 21, 2026.
Non-Certified:
a. Amanda Taft from her position as prek auxiliary aide at Knight Enloe Elementary, effective May 21, 2026.
2. NON-RENEWAL
Non-Certified:
a. Catherine Tobin from her position as lunchroom worker at Knight Enloe
Elementary, effective May 21, 2026.
3. NEW HIRE
FOR THE 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR:

- Mignon Burton as a special education teacher for Roanoke City Schools.
4. TRANSFERS
FOR THE 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR:

a. Theresa Denise White from a math teacher at Handley High School to a teaching position at Handley Middle School, to be announced at a later time.
- Melissa Nelson from a science teacher at Handley High School to a teaching position at Handley Middle School, to be announced at a later time.
5. CONTRACTUAL
a. Contract with Shannan Platzek to provide extended-year services to IDEA students. The fee will be $25 per hour, payable by the Roanoke City Board of Education on a monthly basis upon receipt and validation of time sheets. This service will begin on June 1, 2026, and end on July 30, 2026. The total amount of this contract will not exceed $1,000.00 and will come from IDEA-B funds.
b. Contract with Jeana Combs to provide extended-year services to IDEA students. The fee will be $25 per hour, payable by the Roanoke City Board of Education on a monthly basis upon receipt and validation of time sheets. This service will begin on June 1, 2026, and end on July 30, 2026. The total amount of this contract will not exceed $500.00 and will come from IDEA-B funds.
c. Contract with Jenna Treadwell to provide documentation of the Gifted Child Find Process for Roanoke City Schools’ students. The fee will be $25.00 per hour payable by the Roanoke City Board of Education on a monthly basis upon receipt and validation of time sheets. This service will begin on June 1, 2026, and end on September 30, 2026. The total amount of this contract will not exceed $500 and will come from Gifted and/or General Funds.
d. Approve contract with Melody Phillips to provide Special Education services to IDEA students. The fee will be $25 per hour payable by the Roanoke City Board of Education on a monthly basis upon receipt and validation of time sheets. This service will begin on July 14, 2026, and end on May 27, 2027. The total amount of this contract will not exceed $37,000 and will come from IDEA-B and General funds.
e. Approve contract with Merredith Sears to assist with student scheduling at HHS. She will be paid at $25.00/hour as needed. The funding source will come from local funds.
6. KES SUMMER READING AND MATH CAMPS
Recommendation to staff, as needed, members of Knight Enloe Elementary School faculty to teach state-required Summer Reading and Math Camp from June 1 to June 25.
Certified staff will be paid $40/hour, and Non-Certified staff will be paid $22.50/hour. Bus drivers for field trips and a nurse, as needed, will also be paid. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
7. KES PRE-K SUMMER INITIATIVE CAMP
Recommendation to staff, as needed, members of Knight Enloe Elementary School faculty to teach Pre-K Summer Initiative Camp on June 2 and Pre-K Orientation Days on July 21-22 for rising Pre-K students.
Certified staff will be paid $25/hour, and Non-Certified staff will be paid $17.50/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
8. KES PREK GOLD TRAINING
Recommendation to pay new Pre-K Teachers (lead and auxiliary, if needed) to attend required Pre-K Gold training this summer and Pre-K New Teacher training.
Certified staff will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day, and be reimbursed for any mileage and meals. Funding will come from state, local and/or Pre-K funds.
9. KES LEADERSHIP TEAM SUMMER PLANNING
Recommendation to pay the KES Leadership Team, as needed, for up to two days of summer planning to analyze data, plan for the next school year, and prepare the ACIP.
Certified staff will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
10. KES AMSTI TRAINING
Recommendation to pay KES Teachers to attend AMSTI training this summer at JSU-RIC or any on-site training at KES/HMS.
Certified staff will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day, and be reimbursed for mileage and meals. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
11. KES JUMPSTART
Recommendation to staff Jump Start for the 2026-2027 school year with Roanoke City Schools personnel and/or approved substitute teachers on an as-needed basis.
The program hours will be from 6:30 a.m. until 7:15 a.m. The cost of the program is $5/week. Certified staff will be paid $15.50/hour, and non-certified staff will be paid $10/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
12. KES AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLUBS
Recommendation to staff, as needed, after-school enrichment clubs during the 2025-2026 school year. These clubs will help students achieve through areas not offered during school. These clubs include, but are not limited to, Gardening and STEM. Each club will meet once a week for one hour after school at KES.
Certified staff will be paid $17.50/hour, and non-certified staff will be paid $15.00/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
13. KES FOUNDATIONS/CHAMPS/MTSS TRAINING
Recommendation to pay the Foundations/Champs/MTSS team for two summer days to plan and prepare for the 2026-2027 school year.
Certified staff will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
14. KES POWER HOUR
Recommendation to pay certified teachers, as needed, for after-school tutoring (Power Hour) during the 2026-2027 school year. The tutoring will take place at Knight Enloe Elementary for no more than four hours per week.
Certified staff will be paid $25.00/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
15. KES SUMMER SCHEDULING
Recommendation to pay KES special education teachers for scheduling during the summer to prepare for the 2026-2027 school year, for up to six hours.
Certified staff will be paid $25.00/hour. The Funding will come from local funds, raise act and/or PreK Special Education.
16. KES PST (PROBLEM-SOLVING TEAM)
Recommendation to pay the KES PST (Problem-Solving Team) for up to two days this summer to revise, clarify, and finalize the KES RTI documents in accordance with the Alabama PST Guidance Document.
Certified staff will be paid $25.00/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
17. KES LITERACY ACT REQUIREMENTS
Recommendation to pay 3rd-grade teachers, as needed, to upload state-required portfolio documents into PowerSchool after the ACAP retest in June.
Certified staff will be paid $25.00/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
18. KES ALABAMA LITERACY/NUMERACY ACT
Recommendation to pay KES teachers for summer professional learning related to the implementation of the Alabama Literacy Act or the Alabama Numeracy Act at a regional in-service center or another location not in RCS, as approved by the principal.
Certified staff will be paid $25/hour up to $150/day in addition to mileage and meals. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
19. KES RESEARCHED-BASED INTERVENTIONS
Recommendation to pay KES teachers, as needed, up to three days to prepare an intervention tool document with research-based interventions for each subject and domain. This will provide consistency and provide teachers with correct interventions for each deficit.
Certified staff will be paid $25/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
20. KES GIFTED AND TALENTED CHILD FIND
Recommendation to pay Jenna Treadwell her hourly rate of pay to complete Gifted and Talented Child Find, not to exceed 10 days.

21. KES CUSTODIAL SERVICES
Recommendation, as needed, members of the Knight Enloe Elementary custodial staff to provide custodial services from May 27 – July 31, 2026.
The custodial staff will be paid $15/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
22. KES ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ADDITIONAL SUMMER HOURS
Recommendation to pay Mrs. Faye Burdette her hourly rate of pay this summer according to her proposed assistant principal contract beginning the 2026-2027 school year.
Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
23. KES SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Recommendation to pay KES teachers for admin-approved summer professional learning. Teachers will attend admin-approved training in the summer.
Teachers will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day, and be reimbursed for mileage and meals. Funding will come from a combination of
grants, state, and/or local funding.
24. HMS SUMMER SCHOOL
Recommendation to staff, as needed, members of the Handley Middle School faculty to teach summer school from May 26 – July 2, 2026 (4th-8th), from 8:00 – 1:00. Staff will work 7:30 – 1:30.
Certified staff will be paid $40/hour, and non-certified staff will be paid $22.50/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
25. HMS SUMMER MATH CAMP
Recommendation to staff, as needed, members of the Handley Middle School faculty to teach the state-required Summer Math Camp. The dates and times for Summer Math Camp is May 26 – June 18.
Certified staff will be paid $40/hour and non-certified staff $22.50/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
26. HMS JUMPSTART
Recommendation to staff Jump Start for the 2026-2027 school year with Roanoke City Schools personnel and/or approved substitute teachers on an as-needed basis. The program hours will be from 6:30 a.m. until 7:15 a.m. The cost of the program is $5/week, with RCS employees’ children being exempt from this fee.
Certified personnel will be paid $15.50/hour, and non-certified personnel will be paid $10/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
27. HMS AFTER-SCHOOL DETENTION, FRIDAY SCHOOL, AND/OR SATURDAY SCHOOL:
Recommendation to pay any school personnel, as needed, for after-school detention, Friday school, and/or Saturday school during the 2026-2027 school year.
The school personnel will be paid $10/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
28. HMS LEADERSHIP TEAM SUMMER PLANNING
Recommendation to pay HMS Leadership Team, as needed, for one day, July 13, 2026, of summer planning to analyze data, plan for the 2026-2027 school year, and prepare the ACIP.
The Leadership Team will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
29. HMS SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Recommendation to pay HMS teachers for approved summer professional learning, including SPDG literacy training, AMSTI training computer science training, or other administrator-approved training. Teachers will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day, and be reimbursed for mileage and meals. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
30 HMS SUMMER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Recommendation to pay 6th – 8th-grade teachers to attend four days of A+ College Ready training in June or July.
Teachers will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day, and be reimbursed for mileage and meals. Funding will come from a combination of
grants, state, and/or local funding.
31. HMS MTSS TEAM SUMMER PLANNING
Recommendation for one summer day, July 15, 2026, for the MTSS Team to plan and prepare for the 2026-2027 school year.
The MTSS Team will be paid $25/hour, not to exceed $150/day. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
32. HMS CUSTODIAL SERVICES
Recommendation, as needed, members of the Handley Middle School custodial staff to provide custodial services from May 27 – July 31.
The custodial staff will be paid $15/hour. Funding will come from local funds.
33. HMS TIGER TRAINING CAMP
Recommendation, as needed, to staff the Tiger Training Camp for upcoming 4th-grade students on July 30th at Handley Middle School (not to exceed 6 hrs). Certified staff will be paid $25.00/hour, and non-certified staff will be paid at a rate of $17.50/hour. Funding will come from a combination of grants, state, and/or local funding.
34. HHS SUMMER SCHOOL
Recommendation to staff the Summer School Program at HHS from June 2, 2026, through July 2, 2026.
Certified staff, as needed, will be paid at $40.00/hour and will run 6 hours/day and 4 days/week. Funding will come from Local funds.

35. HHS CAMP 1907
Recommendation to staff Camp 1907 at HHS on July 27, 2026. This program helps to get incoming 9th graders acclimated to the high school environment. There will be a maximum of 10 teachers used on an as-needed basis.
Certified staff will be paid $25.00/hour, not to exceed five hours. Funding will come from grant monies, federal, state, and/or local funds.
36. HHS GUIDANCE/FRONT OFFICE ASSISTANCE
Recommendation that Whitney Lester be approved to work in the guidance office during the summer. She would assist with summer duties that must be completed in the guidance and main offices.
Whitney will be paid at $17.50 per hour and used as needed. Funding will come from Local funds.
37. HHS CUSTODIAL SERVICES
Recommendation, as needed, members of the Handley High School custodial staff to provide custodial services from June 1 – July 31.
The custodial staff will be paid $15/hour. Funding will come from local funds.
38. RCS SUMMER CUSTODIAL SERVICES (REFINISHING FLOORS)
Recommendation that Curtis Calloway, Doug Tucker, and John Potts be paid for refinishing the tile floors at Handley High School, Handley Middle School, and Knight Enloe Elementary during the summer break.
The custodial staff will be paid $15/hour. Funding will come from local funds.
39. HHS ONLINE HEALTH CLASS
Recommendation to pay Donya Beam to facilitate the online health class at Handley High School this summer. She will post the class online and handle all the grading and posting of grades.
Donya will be paid at $25 per hour and will not exceed 10 hours. Funding will come from Local funds.
40. HHS SUMMER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Recommendation to pay HHS teachers for approved summer professional learning. 9th – 12th grade teachers will attend A+ College Ready
training in June and July.
Teachers will be paid $125 per day and be reimbursed for mileage and meals. Funding will come from grant monies.
41. HHS ADMIN-APPROVED SUMMER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Recommendation to pay HHS teachers for admin-approved summer professional learning. 9th – 12th grade teachers will attend admin-approved training this summer.
