Coaches and members of Woodland’s track and field team celebrate their runner-up finish in the team competition at last week’s 1A sectional meet in Scottsboro.
Over 40 county athletes have qualified to compete in the state track meets coming up this weekend in Gulf Shores and Cullman. Handley will compete in 4A in Gulf Shores April 30-May 2, while RCHS, Woodland and Wadley will travel to Cullman May 1-2 to compete in 3A, 1A and 1A, respectively.
Multiple athletes have a chance to earn points or medal at the event, based on their standing among other qualifiers.
Handley sophomore Elijah Stegall is the defending state champion in the 4A triple jump after he won the event as a freshman. His qualifying jump of 48 feet, 0.5 inches is a quarter inch better than his title winning jump from a year ago and a full five feet longer than the next best qualifier, Cleburne County’s Lyric Ware.
Wadley’s Damarious Spraddling and Desmond Thomas; Woodland’s Emma Hines, Asa Burge, Tye Burge and Andrew Sanchez, as well as the Bobcats’ 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams; RCHS’s Mo Winston; and Handley’s Kinsley Arnold, Trinity Askew, Madison Carter, Kassidy Arnold, Alex Busbin, Tayshaun Andrews and Ridge Nelson all posted qualifying results in the top 8 in their respective events. The top eight finishers in each event earn points toward their team’s total for the meet.
Woodland compiled enough points to finish as the team runner-up at the AHSAA Class 1A sectional meet in Scottsboro last weekend.
The standing among qualifiers is often indicative of an athlete or team’s chances of earning points in that event, but an exception below is the Handley 4×100 relay team.
Handley has the 11th best qualifying time in the 16-team field. But that time is less than .7 seconds behind the time of the top qualifier Jackson. Also, 14 of the 16 teams are within one second of each other with their qualifying times. That means the race is up for grabs and depends on who competes the best on the day of the event.
Here are all the athletes who qualified for this week’s state meets, and the events in which they are scheduled to compete.
