Big announcement made today about Highway 431
Officials have picked today’s date to announce that Randolph County is going to be included in the state’s next major highway project. Dubbed “Project Interstate 431,” the road that serves as a major vessel for traffic in and out of the county will be expanded beyond its current two-lane status and upgraded to a full-fledged interstate highway.
Construction is set to begin sometime in the 2030s and end some time in the 2060s, with costs expected to exceed what Highway Department official Axle Roadway described as “a bajillion dollars.”
“We have always wanted to open up the Roanoke-Wedowee corridor and take advantage of what we believe can be the state’s next major thoroughfare,” said Highway Department official Axle Roadway.
The eventual construction could bring big changes to the county.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Randolph County to have an interstate exit that looks exactly like every other rural interstate exit in the United States,” said county coordinator Michael Marable-Benefield-Rollins-Trammell, who noted that the exit will have a Waffle House, Arby’s, and “and an upper-end gas station of some kind.”
“I hope it’s a Buc-ees,” added Marable-Benefield-Rollins-Trammell.
