Woodland pitcher Railey Williams pitched six innings and struck out 12 in her team’s 13-2 win over Wadley Tuesday at Southern Union in Wadley.
The Woodland Lady Bobcats scored in every inning but the second, and Railey Williams had 12 strikeouts in six innings as Woodland defeated Wadley 13-2 in an area game that was played on the Southern Union softball field in Wadley Tuesday afternoon.
The win kept Woodland, which entered this week as the No. 9 ranked team in the state in Class 1A, unbeaten in three area games and raised their record to 8-2-1 for the year.
Emma Elsberry went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, and Lily Kirby and Allie Puckett had three hits each as Woodland put together an 18-hit attack. Alyssa Taylor, Williams, Kinsley McDaniel, and Lucy Phillips added two hits each for Woodland.
Williams retired the first nine batters she faced, with eight of those outs being strikeouts before Wadley broke through for a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Payton Calhoun. That cut the Woodland lead to 6-1 at the time, but the Lady Bobcats added two more runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to set up the mercy rule win.
Wadley scored a run in its half of the sixth, but a Woodland double play killed the Wadley rally and ended the game. Lindsey Brown and Bentley Mulkey were solid at the top of the order for Wadley. Brown went 2-for-3 and scored a run, and Mulkey was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Calhoun finished 2-for-3 for the Lady Bulldogs.
Woodland has now won three in a row since a loss to Albertville in a weekend tournament March 14. The Bobcats defeated Ranburne 5-1 last Wednesday and won a key area game 5-3 versus Fayetteville last Thursday.
Wadley falls to 1-5 with the loss, but their lone victory was an area win over Winterboro last Thursday.
RCHS 11, Wellborn 2
RCHS also remained unbeaten in area play with a dominant win of its own against Wellborn in Wedowee Tuesday.
The Lady Tigers improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the area, and they have won those three area games over Weaver, Saks and Wellborn by a total score of 40-2.
RCHS took the drama out of Tuesday’s game right away with a six-run first inning. The Lady Tigers eventually built that lead to 10-1 before closing it out in the seventh.
Hannah Parmer went 4-for-4 with a pair of triples and two RBI, and Abbi Waters was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two driven in. Waters also got the win in the circle as she allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings. Khloe Yates pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit while striking out four.
Waters improved to 6-3 with a 1.89 ERA in a team-leading 37 innings pitched over nine games. She is also hitting .567 to lead the team and has 11 RBI for the year.
Parmer improved her average to .464 with her big day, and she leads the team with two home runs and 17 RBI in 12 games this season.
Handley 11, Anniston 6
Rayna Smith came up a double shy of hitting for the cycle as she went 3-for-3 and drove in six runs to propel Handley to an 11-6 win over Anniston in an area contest Tuesday in Roanoke.
Smith had a two-run triple in the second to give Handley some breathing room with a 6-3 lead, then hit an inside-the-park grand slam in the third to put Handley up 10-3.
Smith’s big night couldn’t take the shine off of what Breydan Watkins did however, as Watkins went 2-for-4 with a home run and drove in three runs. Those three RBI were big early in the game as Handley fell behind 3-0 after the top of the first. But Watkins immediately tied the score with her long one, and Makenzie McCain later added an RBI single in the inning to put Handley on top 4-3.
McCain finished 2-for-4, and Mattie Cochran added two hits and scored two runs for the Lady Tigers. McCain got the win with a complete-game effort in the circle. It was a bit of a roller coaster for her but she limited Anniston to two earned runs on nine hits and nine walks. She also struck out nine in seven innings.
The win leveled Handley’s record for the season at 7-7 and kept them atop the area standings at 4-0. All four of those area wins have come against Talladega and Anniston.
