Other county teams struggle as area play approaches
Handley took a pair of losses early in the week before bouncing back to score a combined 30 runs in two wins Thursday and Friday. The week culminated in a wild win over RCHS in Wedowee Friday. Handley led 11-2 going to the bottom of the third inning, but gave up 14 runs over the next three innings to fall behind 16-15 before rallying for two runs in the top of the seventh and holding on for a 17-16 win. RCHS had scored a total of 16 runs in its previous eight games before Handley pitchers issued nine walks, hit three batters and gave up seven hits to help fuel the offensive breakout for the Tigers from Wedowee.
Here’s how the rest of the week went for those two county teams.

Standout performances
- Hayden Hare pitched a complete-game 1-hitter in Handley’s win over Central Coosa Thursday. The junior allowed just two base runners on a single and a walk and struck out five.
- Cordan Patterson went 6-for-15 for the week and drove in four runs.
- Zae Dunson went 2-for-5 and drove in four runs in the Handley win over RCHS. He also pitched a scoreless inning in that game.
- Peyton Pinkard went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and four runs scored for RCHS in the loss to Handley.
- RCHS’s Ethan Watts was 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBI against Handley.
- Brody Estes-Shirah went 4-for-14 for the week for Handley. He was 0-for-2 against RCHS but walked twice and scored four runs hitting out of the leadoff spot.
- Handley’s Owen Gabriel went 4-for-11 in three games and drove in two runs in the win against Central Coosa.
- RCHS is now 1-9 on the season. The Tigers were scheduled to begin a three-game area series against Walter Wellborn Tuesday. They will conclude that series with a doubleheader Thursday in Wedowee.
Handley is now 7-3. They have games scheduled at Beulah Friday and at Woodland Saturday.
Wadley
Wadley lost its three games last week, dropping a pair of one-sided outcomes to Mt. Zion of Georgia and taking a one-run loss at Horseshoe Bend. The Bulldogs are 2-6 on the season. Here are some highlights from their three-game week.

- H. Bend 9, Wadley 8 – Thurs.
- Mt. Zion 18, Wadley 8 – Fri.
Standout performances
- Ty Taylor shook off a slow start to the season at the plate to go 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and four RBI in the Friday loss to Mt. Zion. Taylor hit .397 last year and led the Bulldogs with 23 RBI. His two hits Friday came after he had gone without a hit in his last seven at-bats.
- Dekevion Staples went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI in the Friday loss to Mt. Zion. He is hitting .316 for the year.
Woodland (Final stats were not available for these games at press time)
- H. Bend 8, Woodland 6 – Tues.
- Mt. Zion 8, Woodland 7 – Thurs.
Woodland is now 1-5 on the season. The Bobcats will take on Cleburn County Wednesday and Friday of this week before hosting Handley Saturday.
