Police and sheriff’s report: Two injured after side-by-side flees from Sheriff’s deputies

Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to stop a Can-Am side-by-side on County Road 15 Sunday after observing it traveling on the roadway. The driver fled, reaching speeds of approximately 85 mph before turning onto County Road 845. A second deputy located the vehicle moments before it wrecked near the intersection of County Roads 15 and 845. Both the driver and passenger were injured and transported by Emergency Medical Transport to Tanner-East Alabama Medical Center.
Sheriff David Cofield spoke briefly about the incident in Monday’s meeting of the Randolph County Commission.
“We’ve been working on side-by-side problems, getting calls about side-by-sides,” he told the commission. “Then of course, your greatest fear, had one that we gave chase to this weekend had an accident and ejected two people. One of them is still in the hospital, so keep that family in your prayers. But that’s what you’re going to have when people don’t stop, especially in side-by-sides. That’s why we tell people to stop.”
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) was notified to investigate the crash. Due to the injuries sustained, no arrests were made at that time. Investigators later learned the Can-Am belonged to the driver’s employer and had been taken without permission.

A resident was the victim of a gift card scam, losing approximately $1,250. The suspect claimed to be calling from the Brightspeed Fraud Department.
July 22 – County Road 628, Big Springs Community
A toddler was bitten by the family’s Labrador Retriever and was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange for treatment.
July 23 – Highway 22, Dickert Community
Two juveniles stole a backpack, Ryobi drill and flashlight from a workshop. Investigators later recovered the stolen property after contacting the juveniles and their family.
July 25 – County Road 30, Paran Community
A resident reported that a neighbor accidentally shot out one of the home’s windows while target practicing.
July 26 – County Road 53, Malone Community
A resident reported the lock had been broken and three windows damaged at a residence. At the time of the report, it was unclear if anything had been stolen.
