Football Friday Night: Playoff positions set for local teams after Friday’s region finales

The playoff fates of all of the local teams are settled after the results of Friday’s games. And for the three teams that were fighting to climb the ladder in the standings the news was not good.

Woodland and RCHS both lost to fall to third place in their respective regions, while Ranburne did not get the help it needed despite a win and will miss the playoffs for the first time in four years.

The rough night began in Woodland, where a series of big plays on defense and special teams sent Winterboro to a 25-15 win over the Bobcats.

The loss is the first in six games for Woodland, who could have created a three-way tie for first with a win Friday.

As it is the Bobcats finish region play with a record of 4-2 and will be the No. 3 seed out of 1A, Region 5. Woodland will travel to Waterloo for its first-round game in two weeks.

As for RCHS, the Tigers played their region finale shorthanded due to injury and illness and fell to B.B. Comer 30-0. That makes RCHS the No. 3 seed in its region also, and puts them in a first-round matchup at Clarke County in Grove Hill in southwest Alabama.

While Woodland and RCHS did not get the seeding they would have liked, Ranburne’s news was even worse. The Bulldogs did their part and knocked off Fayetteville 27-21. But they needed Vincent to defeat LaFayette, and that did not happen as LaFayette won 39-19. That result gives LaFayette the No. 4 seed in their region and leaves Ranburne on the outside looking in.

Handley and Clay Central, which had already claimed the top spots in their respective regions were winners Friday. Handley smashed White Plains 52-0, while Clay Central blanked Tallassee 33-0.
