Lawrence ‘Larry’ Gaines

Lawrence “Larry” Gaines died Monday, Feb. 24, 2020, at Grady Health Systems in Atlanta.

Viewing will be Wednesday, March 4, from 1 to 6 p.m.

The funeral will be Thursday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at New Beginning Outreach Ministries. Mr. Gaines will lie in state beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Skyview Memorial Gardens in the Welch community.

Mr. Gaines was born Aug. 22, 1953, to the late Henry Gene Gaines and Rose Estelle Gaines in Youngstown, Fla. He had several hobbies, among them fishing, hunting and drawing.

He is survived by his two sons, Bobby Allen and Gary Allen; two daughters, Melissa Hardnett (Ennis) and Shontell Allen; four stepdaughters, Demetria Staples, Shonda Hughley, Shannon Healy and Lucretia Hughley, all of Roanoke; seven sisters, Gladys Shumo of Dothan, Rosemary Potter, Tauheedah Bryan, Susan Johnson and Ruth Hicks, all of Panama City, Fla., Queen Smith of Atlanta and Sally Smith; five brothers, Freddie Gaines, Jerry Gaines, David Gaines, Ricky Gaines and Joseph Gaines, all of Panama City; 15 grandchildren; special friend, Vera Mae Hughley of Roanoke; other loving relatives and friends. In addition to both parents and wife, Delores, Lawrence was preceded in death by siblings, Bonnie Gaines, Latifah Muhammad, Roy Gaines and Gene Gaines.
