Vols go to 3-0 with win over Springville
Quentin Knight rushed for 272 yards and three touchdowns, Boyd Ogles passed for three more scores and the Clay Central Volunteers rolled to a 42-7 win over Springville Friday in their home opener.
The win extends Central’s win streak to 12 straight games dating back to last season.
Central very nearly replicated its score against Springville from a year ago, when the Vols won 42-6.
As they have been for much of the season’s early going, Knight and Ogles were at the center of the action offensively, and Ogles relied on a trusted receiver to account for most of his passing yards.
The junior quarterback completed 8-of-13 passes for 126 yards, without an interception. Javon Wood caught four of those passes, and two of the touchdowns, for a total of 66 yards.
Ogles has now completed over 70 percent of his passes for 444 yards, 7 touchdowns and no interceptions through the first three games of the season, and Wood has been on the receiving end for 294 of those yards and five of those touchdown passes.
Central is the defending 5A state champion and is currently ranked No. 2 in the state on the ASWA’s weekly poll. If things remain the same in the rankings after this week’s games it will set up a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup at Clay Central in week five.
Jasper is currently the top-ranked team in the state and will visit the Vols on September 27.
Central travels to Moody this week, while Jasper hosts Hayden (1-3).
