Woodland wins two in Reeltown tournament

Woodland got wins against Elmore County and Reeltown in the Reeltown tournament Saturday as part of a busy week in which the Lady Bobcats played five games. Here’s how the week went for Woodland.

Ohatchee 3, Woodland 2

Woodland managed just five hits, including RBI by Josie Cross and Madison Mitchell, but the Bobcats gave up the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh as they lost to Ohatchee 3-2.

Mitchell took the loss in the circle despite a strong outing. She allowed eight hits and no earned runs in 6.2 innings of work.

Woodland 7, Reeltown 5

Woodland scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to snap a 5-5 tie, and the Lady ‘Cats then held on in the bottom half to secure a 7-5 victory over host Reeltown in the Reeltown tournament Saturday.

Jaycee Lovvorn’s run-scoring single in the fifth was the difference maker, and pitcher Josie Cross worked around a leadoff hit batter in the bottom of the inning to close the door.

Lovvorn finished 3-for-3 at the plate, while Leah Williamson was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Cross and Julianna Lovvorn added two hits apiece.

Cross went the distance in the circle and got the win. She allowed nine hits and recorded four strikeouts.

Woodland 5, Elmore County 4

Woodland scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and final inning to secure a walkoff 5-4 win over Elmore County at Reeltown Saturday.

Madison Mitchell’s one-out double scored Josie Cross with the game-winning run in the fifth. That final stroke came after Cross had tied the game with a two-run double that scored Jaeden Herring and Jaycee Lovvorn.

Herring finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two stolen bases and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Mitchell had two doubles in three at-bats and drove home two.

Julianna Lovvorn picked up the win in the circle as she pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs on eight hits.

Wellborn 8, Woodland 6

Woodland scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to push Wellborn to a 4-4 tie and force extra innings, but Wellborn scored four runs in the eighth that proved to be the difference in an 8-6 win over the Lady Bobcats.

Madison Mitchell’s run-scoring single in the seventh gave Woodland new life as she tied the game up with one out in the inning.

But she was left stranded at second base with two outs in the inning, and Wellborn’s eighth-inning rally proved to be too much to overcome.

Jaeden Herring had three hits and an RBI to help pace the Woodland offense. Josie Cross and McKenzie McCormick added two hits apiece for the Lady ‘Cats.

Woodland is now 8-11 on the season and will travel to Ranburne Thursday for a key area contest.
