County BOE makes personnel moves

WEDOWEE – Randolph County Board of Education covered a variety of topics at their meeting on Thursday evening of last week.

In personnel business, the board:

¥ Accepted the resignation due to retirement of Sheri Brown, general science teacher at Randolph County High School, effective Jan. 1.

¥ Approved Shannon Fincher and Taylor Herren as substitute teachers.

¥ Approved Vester “Jr.” Whitmore, Joe Minniefield, Jerry Michael Hill, Kasey Swafford and Jerry Sparks as substitute bus drivers.

¥ Approved Joe McFarland as a school bus aide.

Other business

The HVAC system at RCHS should be 60 percent done by Tuesday.

Wedowee Middle School teacher Montana Richardson and Wadley High School teacher Lisa Whelan have set up pages on donors.org, where people may donate to their projects.

New exterior lettering has been added to Woodland Elementary and the central office.

Jacobs presented board members Mark Prestridge and Kenny Rowland certifications from the Alabama Association of School Boards.

Forty-one Wedowee students who made all A’s enjoyed lunch from Hometeam Pizzeria. After Thanksgiving about 50 WMS students will get to duct tape Principal Allan Robertson to the wall in the gym as a reward for a successful fall fundraiser. WMS fifth-graders have been reading “Wonder” and will go see the movie as a group after Thanksgiving.

Randolph-Roanoke Career Tech Center has record high attendance with 299 students attending campus each day. On Nov. 3 RRCTC hosted a successful College and Career Fair with more than 50 vendors and more than 600 juniors and seniors from all high schools in the county. RRCTC received a $7,000 education grant from Coosa Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council to build a tiny house. Next fall, RRCTC will sell the tiny house to fund other projects. Automotive technology students have earned more than 30 automotive technology certificates under the Today’s Class computer program. Students in the education-training program will travel to Birmingham later this semester to take the Praxis Basic Skills Assessment. RRCTC has formed a simulated corporation called Pro-Skills. Students become employees in training, where they are required to clock in and out daily. They even receive bimonthly timesheets that require students to calculate wages, well as federal and state withholdings.

Third-grade students at Wedowee Elementary are learning computer science. They will learn how to build and program Vex IQ robots. They will learn how to program Dash and Dot robots using the Blockly coding language. The teacher of the year for WES is first-grade teacher April Lovvorn. Book fair sales on Grandparents Day were about $6,000, and the overall book fair sales were around $10,000.

At Wadley, 17 students are enrolled in college classes and 95 percent of the senior class has applied to college. The Scholars Bowl team won the 1A division at Southern Union. The FFA forestry team placed 12th in the nation. The land judging team placed first in the Central Division, and forestry placed second in the Central District.

The profit from the Rock Mills Junior High School Fall Festival was $12,671, thanks to incredible community and parent support. The last three years, the PTO has profited $35,380.

In other business, the board:

¥ Accepted the memorandum of understanding between Randolph County School System and Alta Pointe Health System to provide mental health services to eligible Randolph County students. This will allow the students to be served at their schools.

¥ Approved contracting with The Learning Tree for functioning behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans for special education students.

¥ Approved the use of a bus for the Youth Leadership Program on Dec. 5 to Columbiana for their December class session. The Youth Leadership Program will pay mileage and the bus driver.

¥ Approved establishing a line of credit with First Bank of Alabama with Superintendent John Jacobs and chief school financial officer Jodi Cotney as authorized signers for the board.

¥ Approved the board’s Consolidated Plan, which has to do with federal programs.

¥ Adopted a new updated policy manual.

¥ Approved a field trip of 13 RCHS cheerleaders to Atlanta for Georgia Blast Cheer competition on Nov. 17.
