Larry Turman

(ROANOKE) Larry Turman, 70, of Dallas Circle, Roanoke, died Monday, March 20, 2017, at Wellstar Medical Center, LaGrange, Ga.

Viewing will be Friday, March 24, from 1-6 p.m. Mr. Turman will be in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral services from noon-1 p.m.

The funeral will be Saturday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in the Bacon Level community with the Rev. William Dillard, Joe C. Cofield, Eric Ware and Gilbert E. Staples and Pastor J. Burnett Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Skyview Memorial Gardens in the Welch community.

Mr. Turman was born in Atlanta to the late Andrew Goodman and Ida Mae Turman on Feb. 25, 1946. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He attended Randolph County Training School in Roanoke. On Jan. 13, 1970, Larry entered the U.S. Armed Forces, traveling to Germany and Vietnam. During his military tour, Larry was decorated with several medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, 4 OS BARS and Sharp Shooter M16. Having reached the rank of sergeant, Larry was honorably discharged on Dec. 22, 1972. Upon Larry’s return home, he worked for a short time in the lumber milling industry for the late Edward “Sue” Ware.

Larry is survived by his beloved sisters, Kathy Turman McCray and Nita Turman Lane of Roanoke; his special friend, Diane Sims; several nephews, nieces, many other loving relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by two sisters, Trudy Turman and Terlisa Turman.

Serving as pallbearers will be nephews.
