Randy McCurty was born Aug. 6, 1960, in Roanoke, son of Geneva McCurty Shields. As a youth, he joined Saint Paul Baptist Church. He attended Randolph County Training School. As a mere youngster barely out of elementary school, Randy became enamored with Roanoke’s “cattle barn” and would often skip school to go there on trade day. At an early age, he started working there regularly. As a young adult, he was employed as a production worker at Plantation Patterns, Wadley, where he served for 15 years. Later in life, as compromised health began to weigh upon him, he was forced into retirement around 1995. After retiring, he migrated from Roanoke to Atlanta, where he resided with his mother. While residing in Atlanta, he frequently attended Friendship Community Baptist Church, where he enjoyed working with the food bank. He was an enthusiastic gardener and won an award for his gardening. Along with his gardening, he was a great cook as well. He also was an avid fisherman.
His cherished legacy includes his devoted mother and sister, Geneva Shields and Wanda Denise McCurty, both of Atlanta; one niece, Coretta Janet McCurty of Atlanta; three nephews, Calvin Duran McCurty of Newport, Va., Anthony Alphonso Willis Jr. of Atlanta and Deriyous McCurty of New Jersey; many other loving relatives and friends. Randy was preceded in death by two brothers, Dallas and Robert McCurty.
