‘Shoot for a Cure’ raises $1,800 for cancer fight
The fifth annual “Shoot for a Cure” was held Saturday at the Handley High School gymnasium. The Handley Varsity basketball teams raised about $1,800 (and almost $13,000 over the past five years) in the fight against cancer. Money was garnered through donations, T-shirt sales, and paper basketballs in honor of or in memory of someone who has battled the disease.
In addition to donations from the boys’ and girls’ teams, additional funds came from the HHS History Club, Science Club, the Handleyan (school yearbook), Mu Alpha Theta, Interact Club, the National Honor Society, Anchor Club, and Focus.
The entire Handley Family came together as funds were also raised by the Knight Enloe Tiger Cubs, the Handley Middle School Tigers, and HHS students. Outside monies were received from state Rep. Bob Fincher in memory of his wife, Sheila Fincher, State Farm agent Ken Seiffert, Cornerstone Church, Small Town Bank, Joe and Mary Ammons, East Alabama Screen Printing, and Traylor Retirement Community.
Paper basketballs honor individuals who have battled cancer.
