School starts Monday
When school starts back on Monday, the biggest change for students in Roanoke City Schools is that all students may eat breakfast and lunch free of charge.
Meal prices for Randolph County Schools are: breakfast – 75 cents; reduced breakfast – 30 cents; lunch – $2.25; and reduced lunch – 40 cents.
Please see the School Page for a schedule of open house/orientation dates and times in this week’s edition of The Randloph Leader.
Knight-Enloe Elementary
The drop-off line for students is on the main office side of the building beginning at 7:10 a.m. The tardy bell rings at 7:45 a.m.
Breakfast is served from 7:10-7:45.
School is dismissed at 2:40 for those in carpools and 2:50 for other car riders.
Handley Middle School
All students should be dropped off in front of the school. The doors open at 7:00; however, the staff discourages dropping students off earlier than 7:10. The homeroom bell rings at 7:35, and the tardy bell rings at 7:45. Breakfast is served from 7:15-7:45.
Fourth- and fifth-graders will be picked up in back of the school. Carpoolers (three or more students) will be picked up in the teachers’ parking lot, and sixth- through eighth-graders will be picked up in front of the school.
Bus riders and walkers are dismissed at 2:45, carpoolers at 2:50 and other car riders at 2:55.
Principal Lynn Robinson told us the gym flooring was refinished and there is work currently being done to repair the washed out areas on the hill near the playground. She said, “Our custodians have worked extremely hard during the summer to prepare for the start of the new year, and I appreciate all their hard work.”
Robinson asked that parents label all their child’s personal items (shoes, gym bags, coats, PE clothes, notebooks, book bags, etc.) because HMS has an abundance of lost-and-found items every year that go unclaimed, eventually being donated.
Handley High School
Both drop-off and pick-up are on Randle Street in the crosswalk area. The first bell rings at 7:50 and the tardy bell rings at 7:55. Breakfast is served from 7:20-8 a.m. “Second Chance” breakfast is for those who may arrive after 8. This breakfast is served from 9:10-9:20. School is dismissed at 2:56.
Principal Gregory Foster said all students at HHS would get new laptops for instruction. Progress is being made on the new addition to the weight room. There is a fueling station inside the existing field house to help replenish athletes after a workout.
Foster said HHS has a new girls’ basketball coach, Courtney Strain, a new boys’ basketball coach, Blake Smalley, and a new track coach, Kevin Smith.
Wedowee Middle School
Student drop-off and pick-up will be the same as in previous years, beside the elementary office. Students may go in beginning at 7:20 a.m. when the bell rings. The tardy bell rings at 7:40 a.m. Breakfast is served from 7:20-7:40 a.m. School is dismissed at 2:45 p.m.
Wadley High School
Students at Wadley should be dropped off and picked up in the upper student parking lot beside the gym. School doors open for students at 7:25. The first bell rings at 7:34 and the tardy bell at 7:36. Breakfast is served from 7:25-7:36 for high school and from 7:25-7:40 for elementary. School is dismissed at 2:50.
A new lower elementary building has been built on the Wadley campus. Principal Lori Carlisle said WHS would add more dual enrollment opportunities and expand their virtual offerings to students.
A prayer walk will be at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, on the football field.
(A list of teachers at all public schools, open houses and orientations can be found in the August 3 issue of The Randolph Leader, print or e-edition. Access to the e-edition and the Leader’s online archives is included with a print subscription.)
