Carl O’Neal McDaniel
(DOTHAN) Funeral services for the Rev. Carl O’Neal McDaniel will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2012, at Saint Peter’s A.M.E. Church in Headland. He will be laid to rest in the church cemetery with military honors.
He leaves to cherish his memories his children and their spouses, Reginald and Gwenea McDaniel of Birmingham, Angela and Albert Alexander of Fort Meade, Md., Arlana McDaniel of Headland, Arlea McDaniel and Andrenna McDaniel, both of Marietta, Ga., and Cherelle McDaniel of Windsor, Conn.; sisters, Betty McDaniel, Dorothy Saylor, Brenda Woods and Sharon McDaniel, all of Long Island, N.Y., and Joyce Warren; brothers, Robert McDaniel of New Jersey and Kenneth McDaniel of Long Island; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends.
As a minister, Rev. McDaniel was known as a dynamic preacher, often called on for revivals across the Northeast and later in the South when he moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in the mid ’70’s. He became a radio pioneer in the Wiregrass as one of the first black gospel radio programmers and on-air personalities. In the early 80’s, he settled in Dothan, where he founded the area’s first black-owned newspaper, the Dothan Times. Carl excelled in the car sales business as a career until he retired due to health reasons in the 2007. Rev. McDaniel pastored many churches during his 30-plus years in the ministry including, Johns Chapel A.M.E. Church, Enterprise, Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Panama City, Fla., and Oak Grove Baptist Church, Wedowee.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 p.m.
