Terry Beverly
(TALLADEGA) Terry Beverly, 93, was born June 11, 1919, in Randolph County and died June 13, 2012.
The funeral will be Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
He grew up during the Depression, and his family moved to Talladega in order for his brother to attend Alabama School for the Deaf. Mr. Beverly joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served as staff sergeant in the 1067th Anti-Tank Division in the Pacific arena during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945, having been awarded a Bronze Star, among other commendations. Upon his return from military duty, he served as a Talladega City Police Officer for 30 years. It was at this time, he met the love of his life, Evelyn Carpenter, while delivering a sandwich to her at the telephone company. He claimed that the first sandwich was the only one she ever had to pay for. Their love was a shining example of how Christ intended marriage to be. They were charter members of Northside Baptist Church, where Mr. Beverly served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He loved the Lord and shared his faith with everyone he met. He loved people, never met a stranger and truly believed in the goodness of mankind. Mr. Beverly loved Talladega and served his community as chairman of the Salvation Army and umpired Little League baseball games for 25 years. The number of people he helped and the acts of kindness he showed to others are immeasurable. He lived out the Golden Rule and has left a legacy of godly character.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Evelyn Carpenter Beverly; son and daughter-in-law, Robin and Connie Parnell Beverly; daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Randy Jackson; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Dot Hurst; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Mr. Beverly was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Carrie Beverly; brothers, Ford Beverly, Rudell Beverly and Clifford Beverly; and sister, Ruby McLemore.
Pallbearers will be Chad Jones, Heath McDonald (actively serving our military, deployed overseas), Patrick Beverly, Don Huddleston, Steven Sasser, Shea Jones and Greg Sanders. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Talladega Police Department.
Visitation will be held at Usrey Funeral Home on Friday, June 15, from 6-8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mr. Beverly to New Hope Baptist Church, 950 Stephen J. White Memorial Blvd., Talladega, AL 35160.
