Woman dies in house fire
A Roanoke woman died in a house fire on Thursday night.
According to Roanoke Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief Bill Ford, the woman was identified as Cindy Baez, 43.
The call came in to 911 reporting the fire at 410 Cannon St. at 8:16 p.m. Firefighters were on the scene at 8:18 p.m. and stayed until 11:51 p.m. with four pumper trucks and 17 firefighters.
Two people were home with the fire started, and the male occupant, Gregory Hendricks, jumped out a bedroom window, sustaining minor cuts, bruises and burns in the process. He was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel. There were no smoke detectors in the house.
The woman’s body was sent for an autopsy, the results of which are pending. Ford did say that she was not burned by the fire.
The cause is being investigated by Roanoke Police Department, RVFD and the state fire marshal’s office. Ford said there is no indication of foul play at this time.
Graveside services for Baez were Monday at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke.
