Mary Heflin Kinard Jenkins

(MOBILE) Mary Heflin Kinard Jenkins, a long-time resident of Mobile, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, John Melvin Jenkins; her daughter, Catherine Coffey and son-in-law, Jack of Kyle, Texas; two grandchildren; her sister, Linda Kinard Holt of Sanford, Fla.; four sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Pat Heflin Kinard, and her father, Francis Kinard.

Mrs. Jenkins was a graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke and Livingston State College. She loved teaching elementary school children until she began traveling with her husband, supporting his career in purchasing. The family lived in many places including Greenville, N.C., Birmingham, Amarillo, Texas, Baytown, Texas, Machias, Maine, Fresno, Calif., Bakersfield, Calif., Victorville, Calif., Beaumont, Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas, and LaPorte, Texas, before moving home to Mobile. Church family was important to the Jenkins family. In each city, the Lord led them to a wonderful church where they made numerous friends and they remain close today. One of Mary’s proudest moments came when she discovered and met her sister, Linda, and that after 50+ years, she was blessed to no longer be an only child. Mary was proud of her Alabama family heritage, including her great-uncle, Congressman Thomas Heflin, who had the honor of introducing the bill to Congress for Mother’s Day; her grandfather, Judge John T. Heflin of Roanoke, and her cousin, U.S. Sen. Howell Heflin. She was a devout Christian and a member of Day Springs Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Mike Hall officiating. Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
