Andrew Hugh Jackson
(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) Retired Navy Cmdr. Andrew Hugh Jackson died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Community Hospice in Jacksonville, Fla. In his dying, as in his life, he was an example of grace, courage, strength and Christian character.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, who will be sadly missed. His quick wit and loving spirit will remain in the memory of those who loved him so dearly. Born March 19, 1944, Andy graduated from Wadley High School and earned college degrees from Auburn University and Webster University. Because of his love of God and his country, he served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years retiring as commander. He was executive officer and commanding officer of the VS-32 Maulers deployed on the USS America. He was an active member, usher and volunteer at Lakewood United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the fellowship of the “Wednesday Gang” building houses for Habijax, which was a highlight of his retirement.
Andy is survived by his wife, Ruthann Fleming Jackson; two daughters, Christy James and Carrie Jackson; one stepdaughter, Jennifer Medure; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren; one sister Sandra McKinnon; and two nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Maxine and Lester Jackson of Wadley.
A military burial was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 17, at Jacksonville National Cemetery. A memorial was held at 3 p.m. Monday May 17, at Lakewood United Methodist Church, Jacksonville.
