Harry Smith
(MANCHESTER, Ga.) Services for Harry Smith, 61, of Wedowee will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Bethel North Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Forsyth and pastor Keith Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. The U.S. Army Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 5-8 Thursday at Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville. He will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Mr. Smith died Monday, Dec. 1, at Bay Medical Center in Panama City, Fla.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Dianne Miller Smith of Wedowee; two sons, David Smith of Ashland and Mark Smith of Lineville; a daughter, Jessica Glaze of Crestview, Fla.; two brothers, Lamar Smith of Carrollton, Ga., and Kenneth Smith of LaFayette; and nine grandchildren.
Mr. Smith was a native of Randolph County, born July 2, 1947, the son of Dewey and Aline Sikes Smith. He was retired from the U.S. Army as CW4 officer after serving 21 years. While in the army, he served in Vietnam, was a helicopter pilot, a pilot instructor at Fort Rucker and as was a safety manager. After he retired, he continued to serve as a safety manager for the U.S. government in civil service until his death. He also served in the U.N. in Kosovo. He received several medals, awards and commendations during his service to our country. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, as well. He was preceded in death by his parents.
