Wadley, Wedowee parades Saturday

The Christmas parades for Wadley and Wedowee will take place this Saturday, with Wadley’s beginning at noon and Wedowee’s getting underway at 5:30 p.m.

Wadley

Donnie Knight, Wadley parade coordinator, said they already have eight or nine floats entered and he expects it to be a really good parade.

Miss Southern Union Molly Easter of Woodland will be the grand marshal. Along with the floats, the Tractor Club is participating, as well as people with antique vehicles, Wadley varsity cheerleaders who will be throwing candy from the fire engine, and Santa Claus.

The school is making sure students who are interested in participating, such as the homecoming court, will be in the parade, Knight said. Different volunteer fire departments will also participate.

People can begin lining up at noon on Tallapoosa Street, he said, and anyone who wants to enter can just show up.

The parade will leave First Bank, go down Randolph Avenue to the school, come back down Highland Avenue through Main Street and back to Tallapoosa Street.

Envision Wadley will give $125 total in prizes to the top three entries, Marla Stevens Webb said. Laird, Revenue Commissioner Josh Burns and Circuit Clerk Chris May will judge the entries, she said.

Merchants such as Homeways, Creative Corner, Wadley Flowers and Gifts, The Bulldog Grill and the Country Kitchen will be open.

Santa Claus will be at Nana’s Notes from 10 a.m. to 12. All children are welcome to visit with him but professional photos by Larry McGill will be $6, she said. All parties are donating their portion of the proceeds to the Wadley Methodist Children’s Christmas Fund.

After the parade Santa Claus will visit with children until about 4 or 4:30 p.m. Webb said merchants have stocked up on Christmas gifts and they and the restaurants will be open that day and night. Some churches may sell hot chocolate and they hope to have some carolers.

Councilman Frank Reaves said anything is welcome from horses to tractors.

Wedowee

The Wedowee Christmas Parade will roll through town starting at 5:30 p.m., with all county law enforcement officers serving as grand marshals. Special recognition will be given to Randolph County Sheriff’s Department deputy Donnie Grant Jr., who was injured by a suspect while making an arrest.

Anyone wishing to be in the Wedowee parade should call Lois Wiley at Sweet Thangs Bakery, (256) 610-1643.
