Rabid fox found in Louina area
The Randolph County Health Department reports that a rabid fox was found in the Louina area of southern Randolph and northern Chambers counties.
County environmentalist Barry Walker reminds pet owners that Alabama law requires annual rabies vaccinations of domesticated animals that are over the age of three months. Vaccinating pets serves as a buffer of protection between humans and wild animals. Rabies is a deadly virus that can only be prevented, not cured.
The health department gives the following tips to prevent rabies:
Don’t feed or attempt to pet wild animals.
Don’t let children play with strange dogs or cats.
If our pet comes in contact with a suspected rabid animal, don’t handle your pet. The rabies virus may be on your pet’s fur and can expose you through cuts and mucous membrane contact.
Be aware that pet door openings into your home also can let in wild animals.
If you have any questions you may contact the local health department (334-863-8981 in Randolph County) or local veterinarian.
