Bike Hike, Kids’ Fishing Day, two music festivals, boat show and garden tea among weekend activities in county

Saturday is the 33rd annual Bike Hike for the Randolph County Learning Center. You may walk or ride in the one-mile event starting at 8 a.m. at Roanoke Sports Complex on West Point Street.

The route starts at the complex and continues on West Point Street to Handley High School. In front of the school, the route turns right to the library and College Street. Participants will continue up a small incline and turn right on Pershing Avenue. A short trip on Pershing will bring the riders/walkers to College Street. The route then takes a right back to West Point Street and back to the sports complex.

The Bike Hike is not a race. Participants may walk or ride through a historic neighborhood in Roanoke. Everyone is encouraged to register. All participants that register will be eligible for door prizes to be given away shortly after all participants have completed the route. HHS cheerleaders will greet everyone as they finish.

All participants will be eligible for the drawing immediately after the Bike Hike. The following will be given as door prizes: $20 Wal-Mart gift card, Bulldog Grill certificates, Hometown Deli gift card, two $10 certificates to Main Street Citgo, Sno & Go certificates, five Chick-fil-A cards, a crystal vase from the Randolph Medical Center Pink Ladies and $25 cash from Athletic Club.

A drawing will be held for the $100 to be given away.

Prizes for the most money will be presented the week following Bike Hike.

Bike Hike cycle ride

The Bike Hike Motorcycle Ride will begin at Wal-Mart in Roanoke and go to Cheaha State Park. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and go to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.

Registration is $20 for a single rider and $10 for a passenger.

The route will take U.S. 431 North to Wedowee; turn left on Highway 48; take Highway 48 to Linevillle; in Lineville take a right on 49 (also known as N-3rd Ave./Cheaha Rd./49); follow 49 all the way until it runs into 281; take a left on 281; and go to Cheaha State Park.

All proceeds go to Randolph County Learning Center.

Kids’ Fishing Day

WEDOWEE—The annual Kids Fishing Day will be held at a new location this year.

The event will be Saturday morning, May 17, from 7 a.m. to noon.

LWPOA expects about 150 to 180 kids under the age of 16 years to come to fish, eat free hot dogs, drink Kool-Aid and some to win door prizes donated by LWPOA, Alabama Power and others.

LWPOA is purchasing 1,200 pounds of catfish to place in the pond for the kids to catch and take home to clean if they wish.

Directions are: From downtown Wedowee go south on Highway 431 for 1.2 miles and turn right on County Road 15 (just past the Citgo service station). Follow the signs and the fishing site will be approximately 1/2 mile.

Lake Wedowee Jubilee

LAKE WEDOWEE – The Lake Wedowee Jubilee, a Southern gospel concert, will be Saturday, May 17, at 4 p.m. at the Luther and Laska Rice Pavilion on County Road 32.

Featured groups will include the Homeland Boys, the Diplomats and the Lewis Family. A free will offering will be taken.

This concert is rain or shine. Bring your lawn chair. Concessions will be by East Alabama Antique Farm Equipment Club. For more information, call 256-357-2390.

Will’s Way Christian music festival

NEEDHAM’S HILL – Under the Stars Contemporary Christian Music Festival will be held at the amphitheatre at Will’s Way on Saturday, May 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Entertainment will include Brown Bag, Loretta Jones, Indifference, Lauren Dean, Lauren and Callie Knight and CLC Worship Team.

Seniors will receive a free special edition Will’s Way T-shirt. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.

Tickets are for sale at: Corner One, First State Bank, Jon Boy’s Smokehouse, Pizza Xpress, the Randolph County Probate Judge’s and Revenue Commissioner’s Offices, Roanoke Realty, Roanoke Telephone Company, Sheppard’s Jewelry, Sanford Holliday’s law office and at the gates.

Southern garden tea

SPRINGFIELD – The gardens of Roanoke residents Linda and Charles Shelnutt are featured in the May 2008 issue of Southern Living magazine.

Steve Bender, editor, visited and has written an incredible before and after story on an old barbershop that Linda has transformed into a charming cottage surrounded by hydrangeas, hollyhocks, old-fashioned petunias, antique roses and hundreds of other flowers.

Linda has agreed to open her gardens for a Southern tea, Sunday, May 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 the day of the tour and may be purchased at M.L. Awbrey’s, Annie L. Awbrey Library or by calling 334-863-8414 or 334-863-2259.

Refreshments will be served in the garden. All proceeds will go to the Roanoke School Association, which is sponsoring the tour.

Chimney Cove Boat Show

LAKE WEDOWEE – The Chimney Cove Boat Show will be Friday-Sunday, May 16-18.

The show will feature great giveaways rides and hot air balloon rides. Proceeds from helicopter rides will benefit French-Hammond Park.

Admission and parking are free. There is 4,400 feet of boatfront access to the boat ramp.
