Gene Waters

(ROANOKE) Services for Gene Waters, 85, of Roanoke, formerly of Oceanside, Calif., will be Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jamie Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Paran Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Frances Edwards Waters of Roanoke; one daughter, Shirley Jean Luken of Roanoke; one son-in-law, Dan Hernandez of Roanoke; one sister, Hortez Elders of Winder, Ga.; one brother, Charles Waters of South Carolina; five grandchildren, including caretaker Frances Hernandez of Roanoke; and one great-grandchild.

A Gwinnett County, Ga. native, Mr. Waters was born April 15, 1923, son of Jewel and Lenora Victoria Hill Waters. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran and had been the fire captain with the city of Oceanside, Calif. He was a member of Paran Baptist Church and served as the chairman of deacons. Mr. Waters was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Susan Barbara Waters Hernandez.
