Costs prohibit opening landfill more often
WEDOWEE – The county engineer ran the figures and Randolph County Commissioners decided the county cannot afford to open the landfill more than one day per week.
Engineer Burrel Jones provided the commissioners with a report of how much money the landfill brings in versus what it costs to operate it. Presently, it is open only on Saturdays.
Commissioner Kevin Spears noted that landfill space is so valuable, its use should be limited to county residents. “Once it’s full, it will be hard to find another,” he said.
Highway department
In highway department business, the commission:
Tabled discussion on review and approval of subdivision plats. Jones got information from the Association of County Commissions of Alabama and other counties and will be more ready to discuss this at the next meeting.
Learned from Commissioner Larry Raughton that paving on County Road 102 in Woodland is complete and grassing will be done later.
Will look at bids for a truck for District 1.
At the request of Commissioner June Waldrep, added County Roads 892 and 8921 (off of County Road 15) near Pine Flat Church to the paving list.
Other business
In other business, the commission:
Denied a request from Randolph County Jail to purchase a restraint chair.
Submitted James Harris’s name for appointment to the board of equalization.
Decided that if an employee is on Family Medical Leave Act time, they can no longer accrue annual and sick leave.
Approved sending out bid requests for GIS hardware for the tax office.
Tabled discussion of hiring a maintenance person for county buildings. Creating this position should lessen the budgets of other departments. The salary package should be enough to keep the employee, but not enough to break the county. The job description and pay range will be discussed at the next meeting.
Tabled updates to the personnel policies and drug-testing policy.
Will have the next meeting in conjunction with the workshop on Nov. 8 because the next regular meeting day falls on Veterans Day, when the courthouse is closed.
Will close the county offices a half-day on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
