Roy Lee Yates

(WOODLAND) Services for Roy Lee Yates, 80, of Woodland will be Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at 11 a.m. CST at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Revs. Tony Morris, Ronnie Puckett and David Haag officiating. Mr. Yates will lie in state one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in Shawmut Cemetery.

Mr. Yates died Thursday, Feb. 1, at his home.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. CST at Benefield Funeral Home.

Mr. Yates is survived by his wife, Jewell Yates of Woodland; two daughters, Melanie Maddox of Valley and Donna Dearman of Woodland; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Brady of Anniston; two sisters-in-law, Lillian and Rene Yates of Woodland; and a wonderful caregiver, Samantha Dalrymple.

Pallbearers will be Cliff Maddox, Andy Maddox, D.C. Dearman, Kevin Gosdin, Chad Harris and Andy Knowles. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Mr. Yates was born Jan. 6, 1927, son of Lester and Edna Daniel Yates. He was a native of Randolph and Chambers County. He joined the Marines at an early age. After returning home, he lived in Chambers County until 1994. He then returned to Randolph County. Mr. Yates was a World War II veteran. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir as long as he was able. He retired from Opelika Welding Co., where he was plant engineer and purchasing manager.

Mr. Yates is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Frances Yates; five brothers, Esker, Lawrence, Lowell, Billy and Ray Yates; one sister, Myrtice McManus; one sister-in-law, Mary Yates; and one brother-in-law, Earnest Brady.

Flowers will be accepted or donations made to Countryside Hospice, 32 Medical Dr., Suite 2, Roanoke, AL 36274.
