Solomon Flakes Jr.
(LAFAYETTE) Solomon Flakes Jr., 90, of LaFayette died Friday, May 26, 2006, at West Georgia Hospice Center, LaGrange.
Services will be Tuesday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at Powell Chapel United Methodist Church, LaFayette, with the Rev. David Tucker officiating. Interment will be in Handy Cemetery, LaFayette. Mr. Flakes will lie in state at the church one hour before the service.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Vines Funeral Home Chapel, LaFayette.
Surviving are a son, Curtis Michael Flakes of Mobile; two grandsons; one brother, Thomas J. Flakes Sr. of LaFayette; two nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Solomon Flakes Jr., affectionately called “Cutie,” was born April 21, 1916, in Chambers County. He was the fourth of six children born to the late Solomon Flakes Sr. and Artie M. Wheatt Flakes. He was educated in the public schools of Chambers County, earned a B.S. degree in education from Alabama A & M University (AAMU) in 1953 and did additional studies in education at Tuskegee University. Mr. Flakes was a member of Powell Chapel United Methodist Church, a class leader, member of the United Methodist Men and the Administrative Council, and was a trustee for many years. Mr. Flakes was a member of Eastern Lodge 501, where he served as worshipful master for numerous years. He also served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Mr. Flakes was a devoted educator and loved working with young people. He began his career at Unity Hall Elementary School, where he was a teaching principal. His teaching-principal assignments took him to Canaan-Welch, Five Points, White Plains, Pleasant View and Shawmut, where he retired. Mr. Flakes was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Lillie Lyle Flakes.
