Free Health Fair in Wadley March 8
WADLEY – Southern Union State Community College’s Nursing Department and the staff of Wadley Cornerstone Family Clinic are teaming up to sponsor a free health fair for Wadley and the surrounding communities. The event will be held Wednesday, March 8, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the student center on Southern Union’s Wadley campus.
Donna Cordes, CRNP, the clinic’s nurse practitioner, notes that in addition to offering free health screenings and health education, the health fair will provide the public with an opportunity to meet the clinic staff and learn more about the health care services available at the Wadley facility. She adds, “The partnership of Wadley Cornerstone Family Clinic and Southern Union’s Nursing Department in this venture just makes sense. Both are interested in improving the overall health of local residents.”
One of the event’s organizers, SU nursing instructor Sherry Hall, echoes the points made by Cordes. “We want people to know that we care about the health of our community, and we are excited about combining resources with the clinic to offer a community wide health fair.”
Free services to be offered during the health fair include blood pressure checks and Body Mass Index (BMI) analysis. Along with the BMI analysis, participants will be offered educational materials and advice on their ideal weight and heart healthy diets.
Health fair participants will also have the opportunity to receive blood sugar and cholesterol screenings. Cordes reminds those seeking these two screenings to fast after midnight in order to receive accurate test results.
While the health fair’s potential benefits to the community are clear, Hall is quick to point out that Southern Union nursing faculty and students will also reap rewards from the experience. “Southern Union is striving to prepare competent health care professionals, and we want our skills to be used to promote wellness in our area,” Hall explains.
