Wedowee Middle School principal wants kids to enjoy school

WEDOWEE – “I want the kids to be proud and want to come to school here,” said Allan Robertson, Wedowee Middle School’s new principal.

Robertson started his new job last week. It is a promotion from his previous position of social studies and economics teacher at Woodland High School.

This is his tenth year in education. Prior to coming to Randolph County Schools, Robertson worked at Shelby County High School, where he taught ninth-grade world history and government and economics to seniors.

The son of a Methodist minister, Robertson grew up all over north Alabama, in both small and urban communities. He graduated from Thompson High School in Birmingham.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in social science and business at the University of Montevallo and then went on to get his master’s in education and administration degrees there.

“I’ve had great principals and great schools. I’ve watched the way they are run,” said Robertson. “I’ve got lots of ideas. There is an opportunity here I want to take a shot at.”

Noting that with No Child Left Behind, test scores are of utmost importance for any principal in the country, Robertson said he also wants to focus on maintaining the facility itself.

At a recent PTA meeting for the parents of these fourth- through sixth-graders, Robertson said he told them, “They (at this age) still like coming to school. We need to take advantage of that.”

Robertson resides between Wedowee and Woodland with his wife, the former Jennifer Messer, who teaches social studies at Randolph County High School.
