Downtown Wedowee getting makeover

WEDOWEE – Downtown Wedowee may not be getting an “extreme makeover,” but recent updates are certainly making the area more attractive.

The tiny building in the median, which housed the police department until the mid-1980s, was recently given a facelift. Its faky stucco façade was removed by city employees to reveal its original brick underneath. The tiny structure also got a new metal roof, new paint inside and trim outside, new flooring and a new ceiling.

The plans are to make this local landmark a self-service visitors’ center to offer items such as brochures and a community bulletin board.

On Friday, Wedowee Utilities brought their backhoe to assist Wedowee Landscape & Nursery in placement of 10 concrete planters in the downtown area, each weighing approximately 750 pounds. Each of the planters is filled with a colorful variety of summer flowers to add a welcoming touch to the downtown sidewalks.

Wedowee Mayor Tim Coe shows off the newly remodeled visitors’ center.
