SU sweeps Shorter

WADLEY – Stephen Yates carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Travis Calloway homered and drove in three runs as the Southern Union Bison took the first game of a doubleheader against Shorter College 6-1 on Thursday.

Yates (1-0) cruised through the first five and two thirds innings, his only hiccups being a walk and hit batsman in the fourth inning. But he surrendered a single with two outs in the sixth and gave up three more hits in the seventh when Shorter scored their only run.

By then, the outcome of the game was a mere formality thanks to Calloway.

The sophomore catcher put the Bison on the board with a 2-run double in second inning, then gave his team a 5-0 lead in the sixth with a solo homerun to left field, his first of the year.

Matt Horton went 2-for-4 with an RBI for SU, and Carlton Melton had an RBI double in three trips.

Chase Burch’s 12-game hitting streak was snapped in the game. Burch went hitless for the first time this season in two official at-bats.

Yates finished with seven strikeouts in the complete-game win.

SU 9, Shorter 8

SU had to stave off a seventh-inning rally from Shorter in the second game, but held on for a 9-8 win.

The Bison led 9-5 going into the final frame before Shorter scored three times to trim the lead to one. But Danny Davidson came out of the bullpen and put the fire out, getting his first save of the season and preserving the win for starter Jay Fordham (2-1).

SU (16-2) got at least one run in every inning and pounded out 12 hits in the contest.

Chase Burch (2-for-2, 2 RBI), Cody McMorris, Charles Tolbert and Carlton Melton (2-for-3, 3 RBI) each had two hits for the Bison.

After a frenetic schedule of late, the Bison will get some much-needed rest over the weekend before hosting Darton College in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
