The Woodland Bobcats varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams scored victories over the Handley Tigers last Thursday.

Woodland’s varsity defeated Handley 3-of-4 games, 25-15, 25-11, 29-31 and 25-18.

Head coach Karen Beverly said any time Woodland can win over a county rival, it’s a good thing.

“Our girls get excited to play Handley and Wedowee because it’s a big county game,” Beverly said.

Beverly said the Bobcats’ main strength continues to be its serving.

“I’ve been very pleased with both teams and their serving ability,” Beverly said.

Two of Woodland’s most reliable players, Courtney Strain and Morgan Edwards, put up some big numbers against Handley.

Strain was credited with 10 kills, four digs, one block and four ace serves. Edwards had nine kills, three digs, one block and six ace serves.

“Their serving skills are a big asset to us right now,” Beverly said.

Woodland lost to Horseshoe Bend Monday night though. The Bobcats won the first game and lost the second game by only two points, but Horseshoe Bend put them away in the following games.

“They’ve (Horseshoe Bend) got a quality program over there,” Beverly said. “That’s one goal we had for this season, to beat Horseshoe Bend. We’re going to try to do that when they come to Woodland next time.”

Overall though, Beverly said she has been impressed with the play of the Bobcats this season.

“I’m very pleased with where they are right now,” Beverly said. “They’re doing a lot of things well.”

Woodland will play Randolph County Thursday and Handley again on Monday.
