Julia Cumberlander ‘Juke’ Hoggs

(LANETT) Julia Cumberlander “Juke” Hoggs, 71, of Lanett died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.

Services will be Saturday, March 1, at 1 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church of Lanett with the Revs. Walter Darden, Patrick Brown, DeWayne Drakeford, Billy Drakes, Harold Ferguson and Arthur Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hoggs is survived by a devoted brother, Waymon Cumberlander of Lanett; a devoted sister, Annie C. Ward of Atlanta; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; brothers- and sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis R. Hoggs; a son, Lewis R. Hoggs Jr.; and two brothers, Bobby Lee and Bruce A. Cumberlander.

Born Sept. 19, 1936, in Chambers County, Mrs. Hoggs was the daughter of the late Mr. A.C. Cumberlander and Mrs. Carrie L. Reid Cumberlander. She served as financial secretary and a member of the Missionary Society of St. John Baptist Church. Mrs. Hoggs was a graduate of Lanier High School. She furthered her education at Alabama A&M, where she received a bachelor’s degree in business education. Mrs. Hoggs retired from the Randolph County Public School Systems (Woodland High School) in 1998. She had been employed there for 45 years. Mrs. Hoggs was an avid baker, and everyone was a fan of her red velvet cakes and brownies. Her greatest passion was her flowers and working in her yard.

The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 29, from 7 until 8 p.m. at M.W. Lee Mortuary. The remains will lie in state at the church Saturday, March 1, from noon until the funeral hour.
