Your help needed

Three fires that left three county families homeless were reported in last week’s Leader. Two more are in this week’s issue. The impact is devastating for all, but some who have family that can take them in, as well as other resources, usually are able to get back on their feet quicker.

What most all have in common is a need for immediate help, however, and that is where the American Red Cross comes in. Prior to the most recent fires, Red Cross since November 22 assisted 22 people affected by four fires that destroyed homes in Randolph County. These families received $4,009.68 in immediate assistance with things such as clothing, food and motel rooms.

Red Cross relies largely on donations to provide these services. A recent drive for comfort kits of toiletries and other items resulted in donations from county residents to help other county residents in the time of greatest need. These items are ready to be distributed and help the funds go further, but money still is needed for such things as food, clothing and lodging.

This is not something we normally think about until we or those close to us are affected by disaster. Please think about it and consider donating before the need arises.

Donations to help Randolph Countians with immediate needs following a disaster may be sent to American Red Cross, Alabama Lakes Chapter, P.O. Box 246, Alexander City, AL 35011 or dropped off at the office of The Randolph Leader in Roanoke. It can make a real difference in a local person’s life.
