Dr. Gaston Owen McGinnis

(ANNISTON) A celebration of life memorial service for Dr. Gaston Owen McGinnis, 86, was held May 31, 2015, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary at Parker Memorial Baptist Church.

Dr. McGinnis died late Friday, May 29, surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. McGinnis was born Dec. 31, 1928, in Goldsboro, N.C. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1950 and from the Medical College of Alabama in Birmingham in 1954. Dr. McGinnis served a rotating internship at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield and served a surgery residency at Jefferson Hospital in Roanoke, Va. He was chief surgery resident at Lloyd Noland from 1957-1959. Dr. McGinnis was subject to the doctor’s draft and served two years as chief of surgery at Sandia Base Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M., from 1959-1961. He returned to Alabama in January 1962, where he served at Anniston Memorial Hospital (RMC), Stringfellow Hospital, Wedowee Hospital and Bowdon Hospital in Georgia. Dr. McGinnis maintained a private office in Anniston from January 1962 until October 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Hampton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee Owen and Cynthia McGinnis and Evan and Anne McGinnis; two daughters and son-in-law, Donna and Jerry Courtney and Jeannie McGinnis; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will provide flowers from their garden in Choccolocco and requests that no other flowers be sent.
