The Quest Club of Wadley and Southern Union State Community College will host children of all ages at Southern Union’s Wadley Campus Library for a summer reading adventure.
Beginning at 10 a.m. each Thursday in July (July 9, 16, 23, and 30), the library will welcome children for an interactive story time and activity.
“We want to remind children of the importance of practicing their reading skills during the summer,” said event organizer and Quest Club Education Chair Michelle Stewart.
Studies have shown that without regular practice, students can lose up to 20 percent of their school-year reading gains over the summer — a phenomenon known as the “summer slide.” However, dedicating just 15 to 20 minutes a day to reading helps retain critical literacy skills and exposes children to nearly 1.8 million words annually.
To support efforts to improve reading skills and inspire a love of reading, the Southern Union library has also created a children’s section.
“The library at Southern Union is open to the community, and we encourage parents to bring their children and enjoy the selection of books available for adults as well,” said Stewart.
The program will kick off on July 9 with Popsicles with Police, featuring a reading of “Officer Buckle and Gloria” by Southern Union Chief of Police Kent Kirby. Children will also have the opportunity to spend time with area law enforcement officers while enjoying a refreshing popsicle.
Additional programs throughout the month will feature Fine Arts activities, lessons on overcoming obstacles featuring Battle the Bison, and a celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
