For the first time since since the 2020-2021 school year, Handley High School will have a new principal. Todd Cole, who has been the school’s principal for the past five years, has submitted his retirement, which was approved in a meeting of the Roanoke City School Board Thursday.
The board also named current Handley Middle School principal Tena Musick as Cole’s replacement. Both moves will take effect July 1.
It’s the end of a 15-year run at Handley for Cole, who became the first Handley alumnus to work as the school’s principal. He initially joined the staff as a teacher and head baseball coach in 2010 after spending several years teaching and coaching at Beauregard.
Musick now completes the trifecta of principal jobs in the Roanoke school system. She began as principal at Knight Enloe Elementary in 2019 and moved to Handley Middle School two years ago. Now she steps in to replace Cole at the high school.
In other personnel actions approved Thursday the board:
- Accepted the resignation of Zach Barron from his position as physical education teacher at Knight Enloe Elementary, effective June 2, 2026. Barron was also an assistant baseball and football coach.
- Made the following teaching assignments:
- Allison Duncan as a 1st-grade teacher at Knight Enloe Elementary.
- Kinley Osborn as a 2nd-grade teacher at Knight Enloe Elementary.
- Jesslyn Gosdin as a PreK teacher at Knight Enloe Elementary.
- Mignon Burton as a Special Education teacher at Knight Enloe Elementary.
- Brooke Bonner as a PreK Auxiliary teacher at Knight Enloe Elementary.
