The Boys and Girls Club building on Price Street in Roanoke.
The Boys and Girls Club building in Roanoke will soon be under new ownership.
At Monday’s meeting of the Randolph County Commission, the commission agreed to deed the Boy’s and Girl’s Club to the City of Roanoke. The deed will state the building will be given to the city “As Is” and “Where Is.”
The exact transfer date of the facility was not specified, but will take place as soon as possible. In the past several years, the building and surrounding property have cost the county a lot of money. Commissioners agreed earlier this year it would be more feasible for the city to take over the property.
For its part, the city of Roanoke already manages much of the upkeep of the building. According to mayor Jill Patterson-Hicks, the city pays the power and utilities at the building and funds general upkeep such as lawncare.
The Roanoke City Council will have to vote to accept the county’s deed, but that is expected to be one of the final formalities in the process and one that the city would likely agree to.
In other business, the commission:
• Heard a report from Sheriff David Cofield there were 94 inmates in the county jail, 76 male and 18 female. The sheriff said this was largest number since the jail opened.
• Approved for the administrator to advertise for and send out requests for proposals from engineering consultants to prepare the county’s 10-year solid waste management plan.
• Approved a contract with the sheriff’s office to provide IT services for confidential purposes on the National Crime Information Center site.
• Approved an amended call-in policy for county employees in the event an employee is requested to come to work in an emergency situation. The policy will mostly be for coverage of the highway department.
• Announced the courthouse and annexes will be closed July 4 for Independence Day.
