The Town of Wedowee continues to upgrade it recreational facilities at French Park, with outdoor basketball, tennis and pickleball courts coming to the facility later this year.
The town recently added a third multi-use youth baseball/softball field that made its competition debut in the spring of 2024, and it continues to invest in its centerpiece recreational facility.
According to recreation director Lance Daniel, the new outdoor courts will be in the space beyond the left field fence of the newest baseball/softball field and within the footprint of the walking track that surrounds that field. There will be two basketball courts side by side and two courts that will be lined and netted for both tennis and pickleball play. All of the courts will be fenced in.
Once it is complete – which Daniel said should be sometime this fall – Wedowee would win the race for the first known public pickleball courts in the county. The rapidly growing sport has become popular among many age groups, and players have had to seek out courts outside the county to find a place to play.
