County tournament

Shannon Moore and the Woodland Lady Bobcats will enter next week's county tournament as the top-seeded team on the girls side.

After not being played in two of the past three seasons, the county basketball tournament is back on. Coaches of the four local high school teams met Thursday morning in Woodland to set the brackets for the tournament, which will start next Thursday at Woodland.

Handley's boys and Woodland's girls emerged as the top seeded teams in the two varsity tournaments, which are seeded based strictly on teams' records at the time the brackets are set.

On the girls' side, Woodland took the top seed based on its 9-2 record, which, based on winning percentage, is slightly better than Handley's 10-3 mark.

The math was much easier on the boys' side, where Handley's record of 8-4 easily outpaced the rest of the field.

The tournament was canceled in 2019 due to winter weather and icy road conditions in the county. The 2021 tournament was called off due to Covid-19 related attendance restrictions.

Handley's boys and girls are the defending tournament champions from 2020.

Here's is the tournament schedule for next week's three-day event. All games will take place at Woodland High School.
