The Handley Lady Tigers softball team saw their season come to a close late Thursday night in Tuscaloosa. Handley dropped a pair of games in the weather-plagued West Central Regional of the Alabama High School Athletic Association tournament.
Good Hope 11, Handley 6
The Handley girls took the field in game one against Good Hope, the Area 12 champions, who came in with a 27-6 record and one of the favorites to win the tournament.
The Lady Tigers wasted no time in the top of the first inning showing they came to play. Lexi Gosdin led off with a single, Alexis Henry reached on an error, and Jessi Gosdin moved them over on a sacrifice. Singles by Bri Watkins and Cassie Smith plated both runners to give Handley a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.
Good Hope answered in the bottom of the inning cutting the Handley lead 2-1.
In the second, the Lady Tigers got a couple of base runners on board but were unable to score. Then the real story of the tournament became a factor, as the flood gates opened and play was suspended for six-plus hours.
The lengthy rain delay took its toll on Handley. When play resumed in the bottom of the second, Good Hope plated six runs, on three hits and took a 7-2 lead. Good Hope pitcher Sidnie English silenced the Tigers’ bats over the next two innings, while adding two more runs, and Good Hope led the game 9-2 entering the fifth.
Handley would score three times in the fifth on singles by Lexi Gosdin and Mariana Whaley. The Lady Tigers would strand a runner on second, when Whaley got picked off at third base. Good Hope’s lead was cut to 9-5 entering the bottom of the fifth.
Good Hope posted one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to close out their scoring.
Handley would add one more run in the seventh, on singles by Jessi Gosdin and Cassie Smith. Good Hope would win 11-6.
Smith and Lexi Gosdin each had two hits in the game, while Jessi Gosdin, Watkins, Whaley and Alyssa Bickers each had one hit.
Cordova 13, Handley 1
The turnaround time due to the rain delay was quick as Handley immediately found themselves in back to back games late Thursday night. The Lady Tigers took the field against Cordova in an elimination game and fell 13-1 in five innings.
The Lady Blue Devils plated one run each in the first, third, and fourth innings without the benefit of a hit, and those three runs would prove to be enough to end the Handley season.
Handley scored its only run in the fourth inning on a pair of singles from the bats of Bri Watkins, and Alyssa Bickers, scoring Cassie Smith who reached on an error.
Cordova then sent 15 hitters to the plate in the fifth, scoring 10 runs to extend their lead to 13-1, which ended up being the final score.
Alexis Henry, Watkins and Bickers all had one hit for Handley.
Handley will graduate three seniors, Cassie Smith, Lexi Gosdin, and Bri Watkins. The Lady Tigers finish the 2019 season at 11-18.
