(ROANOKE) Graveside services with military honors for John Wesley Bell will be Saturday, July 11, 2020, at 1 p.m. at Skyview Memorial Gardens in the Welch community.

Viewing will be Friday, July 10, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Clark Memorial Funeral Service.

Mr. Bell died Monday, July 6, at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

He was born Jan. 28, 1948, to the late Clarence and Erma Maude Heath Bell in Roanoke. Mr. Bell was a life-long member of New Harmony Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee. John attended the historic Randolph County Training School. He was a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam era, serving from 1967 to 1973. After his active service years, he worked in the textile industry at Handley Mills for a short time. John then became one of the first black police officers employed by the City of Roanoke. He served on force until he retired as a sergeant.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia E. Bell; sister, Dollie Ruth Morgan; special nephew, Demetrius Winston; and special niece, Kathy Morgan, all of Roanoke; other relatives and many neighbors and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rosie Mae Bell; and nephew, Kenneth DeShun Bell.
