(ROANOKE) A graveside service for Edwina "Polly" Smith Gibson, 68, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Mount Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Janice Clark, Calvin Trammell and Jeffery Rosser officiating and vocalist Keith Nolan.
Viewing will be Tuesday, April 20, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Clark Memorial Funeral Service.
Ms. Gibson died Friday, April 16, at Tanner Medical Center-East Alabama in Wedowee.
She was born in Roanoke on Nov. 5, 1952, to the late King Lewis and Lillian Johnson Smith. Ms. Gibson was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She attended the historic Randolph County Training School, later transferring to Handley High School, where she graduated in 1970 with the first desegregated senior class. Edwina later attended Southern Union State Community College in 1979, where she studied nursing. She became an LPN, working at Roanoke Healthcare, Traylor Nursing Home, Pruitt Health and other long-term care facilities for over 30 years. She loved children although she never had any of her own. She also was fond of pets.
She is survived by her brother, Joe Dukes; sister-in-law, Brenda Dukes; special niece and caregiver, Annica Potts; nephews, Terrell Johnson and Jerrell Johnson, all of Roanoke, Ahmad Heard of Jacksonville, N.C., Joel Dukes, of Auburn; and niece, April Denny of Wedowee. Edwina was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, King Lewis Smith Jr.
