(ROANOKE) Billy Ed Williams, 89, of Gilham Road, Roanoke, died early Friday morning, May 31, 2019, at his residence.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 4, from 1-6 p.m.

The funeral will be Wednesday, June 5, at 1 p.m. at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in the Welch community of Roanoke with the Revs. Willie C. Houston, Gilbert E. Staples, Joe C. Cofield, L.B. Houston and Jeffery D. Rosser and Minister Delvan Houston officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Williams was born in Roanoke on Oct. 1, 1929, to the late "Bud" Williams and Minnie Watkins Ware. He was affectionately known as "Game." Mr. Williams was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. He married Mary Rena Askew of Stroud in April 1959 and they had seven children. Mary Rena died on Sept. 18, 1989. Billy Ed worked many years at the Roanoke Post Office before transferring to the Post Office in Auburn. He was a custodian and retired at about the age of 60. He enjoyed his cars and gardening. He later met and married the former Velma Heard Terry, widow of the late Jesse A. Terry. They enjoyed 11 years of wedded companionship. The second Mrs. Williams preceded him in death on March 6, 2004. He served faithfully for many years at First Baptist Church before joining Canaan Baptist Church. He taught Sunday school for many years.

He is survived by his three sons, Billy Todd Williams and Michael DeWayne Williams of Roanoke and Brian Odell Williams of Birmingham; four daughters, Belinda McFarland (Dallas) and Sharon Dean of Roanoke, Kimberly Gail Harper (Rick) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Shirley Bennett (Steve) of Rossville, Ga.; three granddaughters; and a host of loving cousins, neighbors, church family and friends who will miss him deeply.
