(ROANOKE) Evelyn Juanita Phillips Gates, 78, of Doublehead Road, Roanoke, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at her home.

Viewing will be Wednesday, Jan. 13, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Clark Memorial Funeral Service.

Because of COVID concerns, only a graveside service will be held. It will be Thursday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. at Rehope Baptist Church Cemtery, 5267 County Rd. 258, LaFayette, with the Rev. Douglas Jones, Rev. Curtis Spidell, Rev. Ricky Cofield, Rev. W.H. Trammell and Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating.

All guests are reminded of the mandatory face covering while on our premises or at the church cemetery. If you do not have a protective face covering, one will be provided for you.

Evelyn was born Feb. 9, 1942, in Roanoke to the late Willie and Mattie Burrow Phillips. She was married to the late Tommie Lewis Gates. She was employed for 35 years for Randolph County Hospital as a nursing sssistant for newborns. Evelyn was a faithful member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Ray Nelson Gates of Roanoke; six nieces and nine nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Luther and Walter Phillips; and sisters, Christine Smedley, Lillian Phillips, Dera Phillips and Vera Heath.
