(LANETT) Donald M. Phillips, 75, of Lanett passed away April 22, 2021, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
The family will greet friends on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, 1 to 2 p.m. EDT at Bluffton Funeral Services in Lanett, followed by a memorial service at the chapel of Bluffton Funeral Services at 2 p.m. EDT.
He was born Nov. 10, 1945, in West Point, Ga., to Cora Owens Phillips and Alvin Guy Phillips. Don graduated Valley High School in 1964. He was a graduate of Jacksonville State University in 1969 with a bachelor of science in secondary education. He served honorably as a 1st lieutenant for the U.S. Army in Military Intelligence and saw combat in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1971 by the army and the Cross of Gallantry by the government of the Republic of Vietnam. He returned home to complete his master of public administration degree and juris doctor degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1975. He passed his bar exam in September 1975 and worked for the Alabama Attorney General's office for one year. Don opened his law practice in Lanett in 1976 and ran it till his death in 2021.
Don is survived by his wife, Joyce M. Phillips; and children, Donald M. Phillips Jr., Hilary A. Phillips (her children Lee and Porter), Cherith E. Phillips and Corbin J. Phillips. He is predeceased by his parents and sister, Martha R. Pike.
