(ROANOKE) Wilmer Roscoe Drake, 93, of Roanoke died Monday, June 3, 2019, in Sierra Vista, Ariz.

The funeral will be at Canaan Baptist Church in the Welch community on Saturday, June 8, at noon with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour.

Mr. Drake was born in Chambers County to the late Stokes and Addie Drake on Oct. 7, 1925. _He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II as a sniper, tank driver and a cook. He served for four years. He graduated from Chambers County Training School and attended Tuskegee Institute. After school he married Ramonia Morgan on Dec. 13, 1951. Mr. Drake started driving the school bus at the age of 15. He served a total of 50 years as a bus driver. Throughout those years, he also drove the tour bus for the 5 Blind Boys of Alabama. He supported their East Alabama and West Georgia tour. For several years, he was the bus driver for the Five Pointers basketball team, as well as 35 years with the Chambers County school system. He was financial secretary and janitor of Cannon Missionary Baptist Church. He served as secretary for the International Male Chorus. He was also a volunteer fire fighter for the Hickory Flat and Welch communities. He was a member of the American Legion, ADC, NAACP and Iron Sharpen Iron men's fellowship (Calvary's Rock Church, Sierra Vista).

He is survived by a daughter, retired Sgt. 1st Class Reta M. Drake of Sierra Vista; son, Frederick Drake (Linda) of East Point, Ga.; four grandchildren; one great-grand daughter; two siblings, Benson Drake of Bessemer and Frances Drake of Roanoke; many godchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Ramonia Drake; daughter Mary Howell, and son Sanders Drake.
