(HOOVER) Judy Awbrey Childress of Hoover passed away Oct. 1, 2021.

She was born March 2, 1946, in Roanoke, the daughter of Frank and Margaret Awbrey. Judy was a 1964 graduate of Handley High School and a 1968 graduate of Samford University. She later received a master's degree from the University of Alabama. Her career in education began at Erwin High School as an English teacher and later as guidance counselor. She later became the guidance counselor at Pelham High School and remained there until her retirement. Judy served many roles in the Alabama Counseling Association, including president, newsletter editor, ALSCA president and annual conference chair to name a few.

Judy was a faithful member of Vestavia United Methodist Church, where she served many years with the children's programs, including Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She was also active in outreach programs of the church, volunteering at Children's Harbor, participating in the prayer shawl ministry and as a member of Celebration Singers.

She is survived by her husband, Rick; sons, Awbrey and Aaron and daughter-in-law, Emily; precious grandchildren, Samantha Erin and Jackson O'Neil; sister and brother-in-law, Janie and Sam Shelnutt of Roanoke; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private memorial service was held Friday, Oct. 8, at Vestavia United Methodist Church.
