(ROANOKE) The funeral for Johnnie Lewis Akins, 67, of Roanoke will be Friday, Aug. 6, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Styles Akins officiating. Entombment will follow at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Mr. Akins passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, at his sister's home in LaGrange, Ga.
A Penton native, Mr. Akins was born Dec. 2, 1953, the son of Joe Cecil and Lizer Mae Akins Etchison. He worked as a mechanic for Catch a Cab Transportation of LaGrange and was a member of the Civil War reenactment group out of Columbus, Ga.
Survivors include his daughter, Stephanie Petropolous of Rhode Island; son, David Akins in Woonsocket, R.I.; grandchild; two sisters, Bobbie Fuller of LaGrange and Patricia Etchison of Roanoke; and two brothers, Joel Etchison (Lisa) of Cusseta and Travis Etchison of Dadeville. Mr. Akins was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Roscoe Freeman Akins and Melinda Thompson Akins; two sisters, Frances Melinda Akins and Linda Mae Akins Etchison; and four brothers, Donnie Joe Etchison, Sammy Joe Etchison, Billy Joe Etchison and Benny Ray Akins; and a set of triplets.
Pallbearers will be Gabrielle Thornton, Joe Fuller, Timothy Fuller, Stephen Smith and Brandon Etchison. Honorary pallbearers will be Colton Thornton, Bobby Joe Pursley, Tyler Pursley, Willie Pursley and Richard Fuller.
